The Private Chile–Bolivia Cross-Border Expedition

Aywayk organizes private expeditions from San Pedro de Atacama into Bolivia’s high desert, crossing at Hito Cajón before continuing through South Lipez and onward to Uyuni. This is one of the Altiplano’s most striking overland routes: a journey of open desert, colored lagoons, volcanic landscapes, geothermal fields, and long salt-flat horizons.

The route asks for more than transport. It asks for thoughtful planning, steady pacing, and reliable handling on the ground. Border formalities, altitude, cold mornings, remote lodges, and long driving stretches all shape the experience. Our role is to make that movement feel calm, clear, and well held from start to finish.

This is not a hurried crossing. It is a structured private expedition through a remote high-altitude territory, designed for travelers who want the route approached with care, comfort, and a strong sense of place.

Why Private on the San Pedro–Uyuni Route

  • A steadier rhythm
Altitude, road conditions, and long distances are easier to handle when the journey moves at a measured pace.
  • More room for the landscape
This route is not only about reaching Uyuni. It is about experiencing desert silence, volcanic space, lagoons, and light with enough time to absorb them properly.
  • Clean border-day handling
The crossing at Hito Cajón is part of the journey’s logic, and it benefits from clear planning and reliable on-the-ground support.
  • A dedicated vehicle throughout the route
The expedition is arranged around your booking, with the privacy and continuity that this kind of terrain deserves.
  • Thoughtful overnight choices
In a remote desert environment, where you sleep matters. Lodges are chosen for warmth, placement, and consistency within the route.

Accommodation standards

In the more remote South Lipez sector, overnights are planned in hand-picked eco-lodges with heating, hot showers, and reliable meals. These properties are chosen for comfort, placement, and how well they fit the rhythm of the route.

Closer to Uyuni, accommodation shifts to selected salt hotels, depending on the itinerary and comfort level chosen.

Q: Do these expeditions start in San Pedro de Atacama?

A: Yes. This hub is built for travelers starting in San Pedro de Atacama, then crossing into Bolivia through Hito Cajón before continuing through South Lipez and toward Uyuni. If you prefer to begin from La Paz or another Bolivian access point, that should be planned as a different route structure.

A: The expedition is planned around the Chile–Bolivia border crossing at Hito Cajón, including timing, vehicle logic, and the practical flow of the day. Travelers should still confirm their own entry requirements, but the route itself is arranged with this crossing in mind from the outset.

Q: How demanding is the altitude on this expedition?

A: This is high-altitude desert travel from the beginning. The route climbs quickly after San Pedro, mornings are cold, and the terrain naturally slows the rhythm of the journey. Comfort depends on pacing, hydration, sensible overnight planning, and approaching the route with realistic expectations.

Q: How is the route kept comfortable across such remote terrain?

A: Comfort comes from how the journey is shaped: sensible driving stretches, well-placed overnights, realistic timing on border day, and a pace that respects the altitude and the landscape. In a region like this, good planning matters more than density of infrastructure.
